Lost My Mind in Seoul...: In which I am a total jerk and make a complete stranger cry
It has been a stressful week for me. This term is almost over, I have a ton of assignments and papers due soon, I’m taking the Praxis on Saturday, and work has been really hectic. I agreed to meet a friend for coffee before class tonight to de-stress. I’ve been friends with this girl since middle…
I feel like your friend’s projecting. She might be needling your habits because she’s uncomfortable with herself. I’m not judging her, or saying she’s unhealthy. But people who feel the need to constantly pick and discuss and comment on someone’s habits annoy me. There’s something so rude to me about asking why, why about changed habits. You’re far nicer than I am because if someone had acted that way toward me, I would have been like…I’m eating the way I am because I want to. Now we can either talk and have a good time, or I can leave.
And your intentions while showing her the nutritional information were to just shut her up; that someone heard it and had a breakdown sucks, but it isn’t your fault, though I would have felt really bad as well.
In what world is food shaming someone nicer than telling them to mind their own business? This is the correct response, actually, that you made a choice and they can fucking well like it. Not telling them that they’re eating too damn many calories.
Here’s the thing, Tumblr.
Other people’s weight is not your business.
Other people’s food choices are not your business.
If you’re getting angry that someone’s judging you for eating healthy food, why is it that your reaction is to snap at them about their choice to eat unhealthy food? You’re just doing the same thing, but in reverse. And why are people commenting that your friend is being judgmental but you are not, when you’re just doing the same thing in reverse?
Why are people on Tumblr posting videos about how you shouldn’t give a fuck what other people think about your body or weight — which is truth — and then saying, “It’s okay that you said this. You’re only human!” You can’t post a video saying that this line of thinking is not okay and then post a comment saying that this line of thinking is okay.
Why are people on Tumblr getting pissed off that their female coworkers aren’t eating large portions of rice when those same people have posted comments that eating apples with peanut butter misses the point of being healthy? Why are people on Tumblr making derogatory posts about women not finishing their meals when those same people have made posts about how they only eat one meal a day? And why are people on Tumblr making posts about how men body-policing women is not cool when those same people have body-policed other women or their food choices?
Tumblr, you confuse and exhaust me.
